Avoid Acidic Foods/Beverages

Certain foods and beverages such as oranges, pickles, soda and even coffee are quite acidic and can lead to enamel decay. When possible you should try to avoid these foods/drinks. If you eat acidic foods, wait 20 minutes and then brush. Brushing too soon after consuming acidic food or beverage can lead to further enamel erosion.

Change Brushing Habits

Certain patients actually increase tooth sensitivity by using hard toothbrushes and brushing too hard. You should use a toothbrush labeled as “soft” and always brush lightly, applying too much pressure while brushing can actually wear enamel away, increasing the sensitivity you experience.

Try Sensitive Toothpaste

The type of toothpaste you use can also have a big impact on tooth sensitivity, especially using ones that are supposed to “whiten”. If you experience sensitivity in your teeth, try changing to a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain potassium nitrate, which can help block pain in teeth.
